Bona Mega vs Bona Mega EVO: Which Lacquer Should You Choose?

Bona Mega vs Bona Mega EVO: Which Lacquer Should You Choose?

Bona is one of the most trusted names in professional wood floor finishes. For years, Bona Mega has been the choice for machines, abrasives, and finishes for contractors, caretakers, and homeowners looking for a dependable one-component lacquer that balances ease of use with long-lasting protection.
Now Bona has introduced Bona Mega EVO, a next-generation formula designed to take the same simplicity and make it faster curing, tougher, and more resilient.
So how do you know which one fits your project best?

Bona Mega

Bona Mega is a one-component oil-modified polyurethane lacquer. It uses oxygen in the air to crosslink after application, giving reliable durability without the need for mixing. It can be applied to the floor from the bottle or into a scuttle bucket ready for application. What makes this product great in the domestic home is how it reacts and works with scuff marks, predominantly from shoes. It's very effective in not having the adhesion to these types of marks
Key Features
  • One-component system, applied straight from the container.
  • Resistance to scuff marks and common household chemicals
  • Particularly effective on plank floors and floors with underfloor heating
  • Dispersion made with a high proportion of plant-based oil, reducing environmental impact.
  • GREENGUARD certified for low indoor emissions
Technical Snapshot
  • Recoating: about 2 to 3 hours
  • Light use: about 8 hours
  • Full cure: about 7 days
  • Sheen levels: Gloss, Silkmatt, Matt, Extra Matt
  • Coverage: 8 to 10 square metres per litre
Where to Use It
  • Homes with heavy domestic use
  • Offices, small shops, and hotel rooms with steady traffic
  • Projects where eco credentials and proven reliability are priorities

Bona Mega EVO

Bona Mega EVO takes everything contractors liked about Mega and enhances it with new self-crosslinking technology. This allows the lacquer to harden faster and achieve resistance levels closer to a two-component system, while still being a one-component product. It is also recommended to use with Bona White or Bona Natural as a top coat as opposed to Bona Mega due to his non-yellowing formula giving a clear coat allowing the colour from the primers to stand out more prominently.
Key Features
  • Self-crosslinking chemistry that activates on application
  • Faster curing with rapid development of wear and scratch resistance
  • Outstanding filling and levelling properties, making application forgiving
  • Very low VOC content (below 3%) for safer indoor air
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified, plus EN 71 3 child safe approval and fire classification
Technical Snapshot
  • Recoating: about 1 to 2 hours
  • Light use: about 8 hours
  • About 80 percent cured in 24 hours, full cure in 5 days
  • Sheen levels: Silkmatt, Matt, Extra Matt, Ultra Matt
  • Coverage: 8 to 10 square metres per litre
Where to Use It
  • Heavy domestic projects needing premium performance
  • Commercial areas such as offices, hotel rooms, and small shops where downtime is critical
  • Clients who want the benefit of a one-component system with the durability of a two-component approach

Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose Bona Mega if you want a proven, reliable lacquer with a long track record, eco-friendly plant-based content, and a finish that is easy to work with in everyday projects.
  • Choose Bona Mega EVO if you need faster curing, tougher protection, and the kind of resilience that feels closer to a two-component lacquer. It is ideal when time on site is limited or when you need to reassure clients with the very latest in safe, durable technology. Also, if you are using one of the lighter primers like bona White.
Both Bona Mega and Bona Mega EVO deliver professional results with the simplicity of a single component. The choice comes down to whether you prefer the established dependability of Mega or the modern, faster performance of EVO.
