What Fits What: A Straight Guide to Machine and Abrasive Compatibility

What Fits What: A Straight Guide to Machine and Abrasive Compatibility

To sort it out. This is a straightforward reference for what actually fits what across the machines we get asked about most: Bona, Pallmann, Festool, and the common belt sanders.

Rotary and Edger Machines (Disc-Based)

The Bona family 150mm discs, shared across the FlexiSand and its edgers.

Machine

What it takes

Bona FlexiSand

All 150mm abrasives, via the Power Drive plate

Bona Orbital

150mm discs — best paired with Bona Diamonds or Rotex papers

Bona CombiEdge / Bona combiEdge UX

Same discs as the FlexiSand — genuinely interchangeable

Bona Edge UX

Takes 178mm Discs unlike the other machines from the Bona Family.

The abrasive range across this family runs from Platinum Ceramic (50 grit, your aggressive coarse cut) through Green Ceramic (36 to 120 grit — this one sits between the Platinum Ceramic and the Diamond abrasives in the Ceramic System sequence, and works perfectly well used on its own too) up to the Diamond Abrasive Discs and Diamond Sanding Plates for the toughest jobs. The Scrad Pad fits the FlexiSand and any generic buffing machine, provided you're using the correct driveboard

The Pallmann family — 178/180mm discs with Pallmann's own hole pattern

Machine

What it takes

Pallmann Spider

178/180mm discs on the triple plate

Pallmann Gecko Flex (edger)

Same hole pattern as the Spider's triple plate — genuinely interchangeable

Pallmann Gecko Star

The Pallmann Gecko Star is available in both 150mm or 178mm

Pallmann's abrasives here come in Ceramic (36 and 50 grit only; that's the full range Pallmann make it in, not a gap in what we stock), Zirconia (24, 40, 60 grit again, the complete range), and Silicon Carbide for the final finishing stage (80,100). The hole pattern on these discs isn't just a fitting quirk; it's specifically matched to the Spider's dust extraction and cooling through the exhaust pads, and the Gecko Flex shares that same head pattern for the same reason. A disc that physically fits but doesn't match that pattern won't give you the same extraction or cooling.

The Festool family — its own separate ecosystem

Festool's Rotex abrasives that we sell come in two sizes, the RO90 and the RO150, and each has its own dedicated abrasives rather than crossing over with Bona or Pallmann's ranges. We stock Aluminium Oxide discs for both the 90mm and 150mm Rotex, plus a 150mm Silicon Carbide option for the RO150 specifically if you're running a Festool kit.

Other machines on the market that we supply discs for.

Our 150mm discs will suit almost all other edge sanders on the market. Like the Clarke Machines. Lagler Flip, Hiretech and other older machines like K and T. The same does for 178 / 190mm edge sanders that can take what we supply. Most common finishing sanders like the Supaflex and Metabo, similar to the Rotex, do commonly share the same holde pattern as our finishing 150mm discs we supply.

Belt Sanders

Belt width is the detail that actually matters here, and it splits into two camps rather than one standard size across every machine.

200mm belts:

  • Lagler Hummel
  • Pallmann Cobra
  • Bona Belt UX
  • Bona Lite

250mm belts:

  • Bona Belt (the standard Bona Belt sander — note this is a different width to the Bona Belt UX and Bona Lite, despite the shared branding)
  • Other 250mm-wide machines such as Haywoods, which we can also supply

Match the disc to the hole pattern, not just the diameter, on Pallmann machines, the fit might be close enough, but the performance won't be there without the right pattern. On Bona machinery, the 150mm family covers you across the FlexiSand, Orbital and edgers. And on belts, check the width before the brand name; two machines sharing "Bona" in the name doesn't mean they share a belt size.

If you're ever not sure what fits your specific setup, get in touch before you order; a five-minute conversation is cheaper than a disc or belt that goes straight in the bin.

The Abrasive Month offer

This closes out our final week of Abrasive Month: Pallmann Abrasives in the spotlight, with Starcke, Gritline and Bona all still 10% off too. Get your machine's abrasives sorted properly before the discount ends.
