The Best Practice: Mixing Colour Plus with Lacquer

One highly effective method for achieving a premium finish with Tover Colour Additives involves combining the additives directly with your chosen lacquer I have used this system myself so can safely say this works:

  1. First Coat Without Colour
    • Apply one coat of either Tover Home Maxi lacquer or Tover Idrolak DR97 lacquer without any Colour Plus.
    • Follow standard application directions, including recommended drying times.
    • Once it dries, lightly abrade the surface (as per the manufacturer’s guidelines) to promote good adhesion for the subsequent layer.
  2. Second Coat With Colour
    • Mix the recommended amount of Colour Plus additive thoroughly into the same lacquer (Home Maxi or Idrolak DR97).
    • Avoid exceeding the mixing ratio provided in the instructions. If you want a more understated look, use less additive.
    • Apply this second coat, maintaining a wet edge to prevent lap marks and ensuring even coverage.

By separating a clear base coat from the colour-infused coat, you’ll achieve better adhesion, a uniform colour, and an overall smoother finish. Otherwise it does have the tendency to look milky or hazy.

Step-by-Step Application Guide

  1. Surface Preparation
    • Sand the floor using up to 100–120 grit for a smooth base.
    • Thoroughly vacuum or sweep to remove debris, then tack the surface with a cloth lightly dampened in a suitable cleaning solution.
    • Inspect for any stains or uneven spots that may need extra attention before coating.
  2. First Lacquer Coat (Clear)
  3. Light Abrade
    • Once the first coat is dry, abrade it lightly as specified by the manufacturer. This step promotes stronger bonding with the colour-infused layer.
  4. Second Lacquer Coat (With Colour Plus)
    • Carefully stir (don’t shake) the Colour Plus into the lacquer, sticking closely to the recommended mixing ratio.
    • For a subtler effect, reduce the amount of additive used.
    • Apply the mixture evenly, working methodically to maintain a wet edge and prevent overlap marks.
  5. Drying and Curing
    • Give the floor adequate time to dry. Refer to the product datasheet for guidance on drying and curing.
    • Ensure consistent ventilation to help with fumes and speed up the drying process.
  6. Final Inspection
    • Assess the floor under various lighting conditions for any inconsistencies or streaks.
    • Check the texture by running your hand or a clean cloth over the surface, feeling for dust nibs or rough areas.
    • If everything looks and feels right, remove any leftover materials responsibly.

Common Challenges and Pro Tips

  1. Colour Variation: Always start with a test area to ensure you’re happy with the ratio of colour to lacquer.
  2. Streaks or Lap Marks: Work quickly with overlapping passes and maintain a wet edge at all times.
  3. Over-Pigmentation: Stick to the recommended ratios. Too much pigment can cause issues like streaking or patchy results.
  4. Bubbling or Foaming: Stir slowly and gently; shaking the product can introduce bubbles that appear on the floor’s surface.
