Recoating Your Wood Floor with Bona Traffic HD Lacquer: A Step-by-Step Guide

Recoating Your Wood Floor with Bona Traffic HD Lacquer: A Step-by-Step Guide

Applying a new layer of lacquer to an already lacquered wood floor is a quick and cost-effective way to extend its lifetime and postpone the need for major refurbishment. The process involves deep cleaning the surface, superficial abrasion, and the application of a new layer of lacquer. This not only removes deeply ingrained dirt, scuff marks, and superficial scratches but also brings new life to the surface, making your floor look as good as new.

We recommend recoating existing surfaces using only the following lacquers: Bona Traffic HD, Bona Traffic HD Anti-slip, or Bona Traffic HD Raw. Each of these products is designed to provide a durable, high-quality finish that will keep your floors looking great for years to come

Preparing Your Floor for Recoating

Preparation is key to a successful recoating. The way you prepare the wood floor, varies depending on the type of surface, its condition, and the previous maintenance of the floor. Below, we outline the steps for different floor conditions. For recoating sports floors, please get in contact with us at Hello@ultimatefloorcare.co.uk and we can advise the complete procedure for this type of finish.

Different Floor Conditions

Pre-finished Flooring

Before starting, ensure that your floor is installed according to industry standards and is in sound condition without deep damage, big gaps, or cupped or loose boards. Make local repairs before recoating or consider a full resand and renovation if damages are extensive.

Testing Adhesion and Compatibility

Always test the adhesion and compatibility of the coating to the surface in a small area before treating the whole floor. Proceed with recoating only if the adhesion and appearance are satisfactory.

Before you begin, determine if polish and other care products have been used on the floor. Check for the presence of polish/wax by scratching the surface with a coin. If material is easily removed, polish/wax is present, and recoating such floors is NOT RECOMMENDED until it can be established that these products have been completely removed.

Cleaning Surfaces with Polish or Care Products

Apply Bona Deep Clean Solution diluted at 10% to the surface and leave it to stand for 2 minutes.

Use a Bona Buffer or Bona FlexiSand with a Bona Scrad Pad (407mm) with a White Bona Superpad (407mm) as backing to clean the surface and remove all polish or wax.

Clean corners and edges manually. Avoid applying excessive water and ensure the surface remains wet during the process. Reapply the diluted Deep Clean solution if areas dry before the 2 minutes have elapsed.

Remove the slurry immediately with a wet vac, Bona PowerScrubber, or towels.

Clean the surface with water to remove any residues from the Deep Clean Solution.

Dry the floor with towels and allow it to air dry completely before proceeding.

General Cleaning on Surfaces without Polish or Care Products

Clean the surface using the Bona PowerScrubber (Red or Green brushes) with diluted Bona Deep Clean Solution (10%) in the tank. Manually clean corners and edges if needed.

Clean the surface again with the Bona PowerScrubber using water to remove any residues.

Let the surface dry completely, ensuring no puddles of cleaning solution or water remain, particularly in bevels or grooves.

Sanding the Floor

Pre-finished Flooring & Used Lacquered Wood Flooring with a Flat Surface

For pre-finished flooring, abrade the surface with Bona Diamond Abrasives 240 grit. For used lacquered wood flooring, use 120 grit.

Attach the diamond abrasive discs to a Bona Multidisc or Bona Quattro Disc with intermediate pads. Abrade corners and edges manually or with an orbital sander.

Vacuum is used to remove loose sanding dust or wipe it with a Bona Dusting Pad. For large surfaces, use the Bona PowerScrubber with clean water or the Bona FlexiSand with a Tampico Brush connected to a DCS.

Apply 1-2 layers of Bona Traffic HD lacquer with a Bona Roller or Swivel Head Applicator (8-10 m²/lit) and allow to cure fully before bringing the floor back to full use.

Used Lacquered Wood Flooring with a Brushed, Beveled, or Distressed Surface

Abrade the dry surface using a Bona FlexiSand equipped with a Bona Scrad Pad (407mm) with a White Bona Superpad (407mm) as backing. Abrade corners and edges manually.

Vacuum to remove loose sanding dust or wipe with a Bona Dusting Pad. Ensure no dust or water remains in the bevels or grooves.

Apply 1-2 layers of Bona Traffic HD lacquer with a Bona Roller or Swivel Head Applicator (8-10 m²/lit) and allow to cure fully before bringing the floor back to full use.
