Different Roller Sleeves and what you use them on.

With different types of finishes available in primers and lacquers, one thing that is so important is how it is applied and the roller sleeve used. In this blog, I will talk about the Pallmann finishes and their applications for applying lacquers and primers. Most of the finishes fall under the use of 4 different roller sleeves: solvent sleeve, special sleeve, water-based sleeve, and gloss sleeve. Now the first question I get asked a lot is, what is the main difference? That is mainly due to the amount of product that needs to be applied to the floor. It works out that the height of the pile times by 10 is the amount of product that needs to be applied to the floor in a square meter. This is done but the amount of product absorbed by the pile in the sleeve.

For example, for water-based lacquers like Pallmann Pall-X 96 and Pallmann Pall-x 98, the amount of product that needs to be applied in a square meter is approximately 100 - 110ml per square meter. So a 10 - 11mm pile roller is needed, which is the length of the pile. Of course, this is within a certain tolerance within reason but the main principle of the amount that is applied. Below is a breakdown of the rollers that we supply from Pallmann and what finishes are to be used with them.

Pallmann Water-Based Sleeve

This applicator roller sleeve is for water-based lacquers with a 10 – 11mm pile to apply this product 100 – 110ml per square meter to ensure the product's correct thickness is applied. This roller is for water-based lacquers and primers. Here are what products this sleeve is to be used for.

Pallmann Solvent Based Sleeve

This application roller sleeve is designed for solvent/alcohol based primers. Pallmann pride itself on not having any alcohol-based lacquers. This is used for applying their alcohol-based primers and other surface treatment products. With a pile height of 4mm, these products need to be applied to the floor thinly, to approximately 40ml per square meter. Here is what products this sleeve is for use with.

Pallmann Allbase

Pallmann Pall-X 350

Pallmann Hardwax Oil

 Pallmann Special Application Roller

This application roller sleeve is for applying surface treatment products with pigment. The pigment is what is used in the finishes to change the look/style, almost like slightly changing the color from completely clear unfinished to whitewashed look. The pile is 8mm so 80ml per square meter should be applied. Can you see the pattern yet? Here are the products that this roller sleeve is used for.

Pallmann Pall-X Zero

Pallmann Eco Oil

Pallmann Pall-X 330

Pallmann Water Based Sleeve For Gloss

This applicator roller sleeve is for applying gloss products. Although this finish is not very popular in the UK market when applying a gloss finish a thick coat is needed to be applied to the floor. So, the pile height of this roller is 18mm; 180ml per square meter will need to be applied. Here is the product this roller is used to apply.
